Mentor to first year entering Accounting stream students at the University of Limpopo
Award achieved 1
I was previously a mentor to first year entering Bachelor of Accountancy students at the University of Limpopo. Part of my job as a mentor was to guide the students as to how to adjust to the university environment and guide them through some of the challenges that may be there. I will spend hours having conversations with some students and for me I felt that this really added a lot to my communication skills because through those conversations I was able to listen more and learn more from them. Hence, I am used to leading a conversation.
One of the reasons why I also decided to join the mentorship program was because I wanted to see myself adding value to someone else's life. Part of my duties was to hold a minimum of three hours sessions per week, with them, addressing some of the difficult modules one being accounting, as the university identified accounting as one of the modules that students struggle with more especially those students that come out from high school and only start doing accounting at the university. Hence this improved my planning and organizing skills as I had to plan topics to address, my presentations as well as to organize how I will conduct my sessions. Through all this, I have realized that I am very passionate and committed to whatever I set my mind to.
