Finished in the top 15 percent of the February 2024 CFA Level 1 exam cohort.
I learnt all of the content for the exam in 2.5 months over the course of my end of year holidays in 2023/2024, starting in December. I undertook to write the exam to improve my overall level of finance knowledge and to set myself a part from other CA traineeship applicants when applying for articles.
Sacrificing my summer holidays and over 300 hours of study-time in the end was all worth it!

Self-Employed Tutor
Education
2020-12-31 - 2024-12-30
Privately tutored 8-12 students weekly in Accounting, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
Developed tailored lesson plans to help students improve academic performance.
Improved students’ understanding of complex concepts, leading to significant academic
improvements.
Improved students' time management skills, leading to better academic and extra-curricular performance.
In 2021 I tutored 12 students. This decreased to 10 students in 2022 & 2023, and then again to 8 students in 2024 as the workload of university became more demanding. However; due to my students performing well, I am often referred clients, most of which I do not have capacity to take on. My time constraints essentially cost me lost income from these potential clients, thus to recoup some of these opportunity costs, I outsource these clients to other tutors and take a percentage of each lesson's payment as a finder's and invoice-admin fee.
This year, the extent of my university workload increased significantly. This, as well as playing water polo 4-5 times a week for UCT meant that tutoring 10 students every week as per 2023 would prove to be difficult. In order to combat this loss of income, I downsized my client base and pivoted my lesson strategy to being "Group Based". This meant I was able to do fewer tutoring sessions per week, but earn the same income I made in 2023 as group lessons generate far more revenue per hour. For instance, my one-on-one first-year accounting lesson fee is R400 per hour. However; this year I had a group of 4 accounting students, charging R200 each per hour, resulting in a cumulative R800 per hour lesson fee. This approach saved me valuable time to focus on my studies, while still enabling me to support myself adequately.
My tutoring journey exposed me to what it would be like to run a service-based business. However; this year I decided I would also like to gain experience in a product-driven business. The vehicle I used to gain this exposure was my friend's boutique surf wear brand: Slab Apparel. Our initial agreement was that I would handle the business's finances, bookkeeping and taxation - in return for 35% of the company. I fulfilled these functions over the course of 2024 and gained valuable insight into the operations side of the business. However; towards the end of 2024, I decided I simply did not have the time to fully commit to Slab due to my tutoring, water polo and academic commitments. This in turn, lead to my withdrawal from the business in October.
