Mergon Investment Group

I had the privilege to complete a summer module at the University of Warwick’s satellite campus in Venice.
We studied a brief history of Venice, the sustainability issues the city faces and the possibilities for Venice to reinvent itself to become a more sustainable city and environment for residents and tourists alike.
We had to perform a research project and write an essay on our findings. My research related to the negative impact of Airbnb on the residents of tourist-hotspot cities such as Venice. My findings were that Airbnb has a significantly detrimental impact on the living costs of residents because it drives up rental prices and consequently forces residents to move out of city centers into the outskirts of cities. This has contributed to the exodus of thousands of Venitians each year -- leaving only a fraction of the original population in the dying city.

This course helped elevate my pitching skills and enhanced my leadership skills for Drip Markets. Through this course I was able to participate in the regional finals of the Entrepreneurial Development for Higher Education (EDHE).

2020-09-30 - 2023-07-30
I co-founded Drip Markets during my Matric year in 2020. Since then, we have gone through trial and error to produce a marketplace app which is listed on the App Store and Play store, and which has gathered a user base of over 5000 South African youth. We showed resilience in building our platform, and after two years of hard work we officially launched at the start of 2023.
I handled the finances of the company, directed the development and implemented my vision for the platform during my time at the company. The company is still up and running and I am still actively involved, but I took a small step away starting in August to allow myself the chance to truly focus on my studies as this was an area that I had not prioritised throughout university.
